Gender Issues in Society

A conscious observation of everyday social world and a careful reflection upon it through the lens of sociology of gender provides an interesting view of gender issues in society. The findings are based on observation and reflection of the things that I discovered when walking around my neighborhood. There are several aspects of the gendered nature of the social world that are actually surprising and I had not noticed before. They include gender roles and socialization and capabilities.

In the society, the segregation of gender roles could be surprising. For instance, there are people who restrict the female gender to domestic chores particularly cleaning and cooking. This psychological process is called orientation. Due to orientation, people do not accept the view that men should equally participate in such domestic duties, but prefer the males to participate in external duties at home such as cleaning the compound and fixing broken facilities. This orientation starts at an early age of a child where the girls are taught how to prepare meals and ensure that the clothes and houses are cleaned. The male gender is treated as the providers or bread winners, whereby they are expected to work hard and provide for the family’s basic and secondary needs.

In most households in the neighborhood, the residents enforce conformity to these gender norms by sticking to the roles that were defined to them during the early stages of life. The conformity comes as a result of adhering to societal practices due to perceived benefits and to enhance personal integrity. However, one should note that its application is not universal as there are parents who do not define gender roles to their children, and would like to see them engage in any domestic and non-domestic activities. They actually refuse to orient their children to divide roles along gender lines or preferences as this can lead to prejudice or stereotyping.

In terms of socialization, gender segregation is another psychological process that is surprisingly evident among the children whether in school or at home. In the neighborhood, girls tend to play separately from their male colleagues especially before adolescence. This is evident in most of the social settings in the neighborhood. During and after adolescent stage, there is tendency where both gender refuse to conform with gender segregation and get attracted to the opposite, an issue that largely depend on one’s socialization, peer influence, parental guide, and personal desire. The segregation and reintegration of gender at different stages of life may affect a growing child to adopt their colleagues’ ways of life. Although there is danger if the child is not advised properly during this stage, certain children are socialized to restrain from the influence of their opposite gender.

On the other hand, gender capabilities are also surprising because females have always been treated as weaker gender than their male colleagues. Most of the female gender tends to hate vigorous duties and those which need a lot of energy. However, there are women who have challenged the norms and are currently serving in the military forces, construction firms and engineering duties against all odds. Some of the women have also shown massive power especially those engaging in world boxing championships, thus they refuse to conform to societal expectations in terms of capabilities. In fact, their strength is above the reach of some male gender hence very surprising. This is unusual from the classical norm of being a weaker gender.

In a sociological interpretation, each gender usually adheres to the orientation at young age, but as they grow, perceptions, desires and capabilities change. Each person tends to be his or her own and pursue those interests in the most feasible way to him or her. This means that certain sociological norms are increasingly becoming irrelevant in society as people become more dynamic.
